A Statistically−based Switching Algorithm for ATM Network

چکیده
Computer networking technologies support high−speed transmission of information and services for multimedia applications that include voice, video and data traffic in a single access path. One of these technologies is Asynchronous Transfer Mode (ATM), which is a switching technology for information processing over the network and is the choice of Integrated Services Digital Networks (B−ISDN). ATM is a cell−based switching technology that traditionally used static−priority switching algorithms. Static priority algorithms however result in starvation of low priority cells in the presence of higher priority ones. The use of dynamic priority algorithms resolved the starvation problem and improved end−to−end Quality of Service (QOS). However, dynamic priority algorithms require more hardware and execution time relative to static [1−6]. The proposed algorithm is dynamic and optimal as far as extra hardware requirement and additional running time are concerned. Computer simulation is used to demonstrate its superiority over some of the existing dynamic priority techniques.

A Cell Burst Scheduling for ATM Networking Part I: Theory
Fair queueing is a useful queueing discipline for packet switching systems. It was developed in last decade and was aimed at the general packet switching systems with varying packet length. However, it is not suitable for use in the ATM networking, because the ATM cell length is very small and fixed, and so the scheduling scheme on a per cell basis isn’t practical. Here we introduce the burst a...
متن کاملThe Folded Hypercube ATM Switches
Over the past few years, many high performance asynchronous transfer mode (ATM) switches have been proposed. The majority of these switches have high performance but also high hardware complexity. Therefore, there is a need for switch designs with low complexity and high performance. This research proposes three new ATM switches based on the folded hypercube network (FHC). The performance of th...

The Multiprotocol Label Switching (MPLS) Architecture [1] discusses a way in which Asynchronous Transfer Mode (ATM) switches may be used as Label Switching Routers. The ATM switches run network layer routing algorithms (such as Open Shortest Path First (OSPF), Intermediate System to Intermediate System (IS-IS), etc.), and their data forwarding is based on the results of these routing algorithms...
